About

The Alaska Native Plant Society (AKNPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to studying and conserving Alaska's native plants through education, research, and community engagement. Founded in 1982 by amateur and professional botanists, AKNPS promotes understanding of Alaska's native flora and the critical importance of its protection. The organization accomplishes its mission through monthly educational meetings featuring expert presentations on plant families and botanical topics, field trips ranging from local outings to multi-day excursions throughout Alaska, and active participation in community events. AKNPS offers numerous ways for Alaskans to get involved in native plant conservation, including volunteer opportunities in habitat restoration, invasive species control, and public education. The organization also operates a native seed distribution program for members and maintains comprehensive botanical resources including the Borealis newsletter and a floristic bibliography.
