Master Gardener Program

About

The Clemson Extension Master Gardener Program trains and mobilizes knowledgeable volunteers across South Carolina to deliver research-based horticultural education to communities statewide. Through an intensive 40-hour training course covering essential topics including soils, plant nutrition, entomology, plant pathology, vegetable gardening, lawn management, and woody ornamental culture, participants gain the expertise needed to serve as trusted gardening resources. Master Gardeners complete 40 hours of educational service to earn certification and maintain their status through ongoing continuing education. This volunteer network plays a vital role in advancing public knowledge of gardening and horticulture throughout South Carolina, with local Extension Horticulture Agents serving as coordinators in multiple regions including Beaufort, Charleston, Greenville, and Spartanburg. Beyond the core Master Gardener Program, Clemson Extension offers additional learning opportunities such as the Home Horticulture Foundations online course, designed for beginners interested in growing fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits in home gardens.
