Master Gardener Program

About

The UC Master Gardener Program, operating since 1980 under UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, is California's premier volunteer-driven gardening education initiative. With over 6,000 active volunteers across 52 California counties, the program extends research-based knowledge on home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices directly to California residents. Through hands-on workshops, community demonstrations, and personalized consultations, UC Master Gardeners teach sustainable growing methods that protect California's natural resources while building eco-conscious communities. The program maintains more than 1,286 demonstration, community, and school gardens, offering education to diverse populations including youth, seniors, veterans, and individuals in detention centers. By combining University of California's pioneering horticultural research with local expertise, the program empowers Californians to cultivate gardens that support environmental stewardship and sustainable food production.
