Master Gardener Program

About

The University of Maine Extension Master Gardener Program fosters sustainable gardening practices and enriches communities through research-based horticultural education and volunteer service. With nearly 1,000 active Master Gardener Volunteers contributing over 28,000 hours annually, the program empowers gardeners to create positive environmental change through native pollinator gardens, school garden installations, food security projects, and community education initiatives. By combining 40+ hours of in-depth training from UMaine Extension educators with hands-on volunteer work, Master Gardeners develop expertise in sustainable practices while addressing local ecological and food system needs. The program welcomes all community members who share a passion for using gardening skills to support their neighborhoods and enhance local biodiversity.
