About
Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail is a 155-acre nonprofit environmental and horticultural learning center located in Walpole and Alstead, New Hampshire. Founded in 1990, the organization combines ecological landscape expertise with public education, offering nearly two miles of wheelchair and stroller-accessible nature trails through biodiverse land. Led by Michael Nerrie, the Chief Environmental Observer and resident naturalist, Distant Hill specializes in native plant integration, invasive species removal, meadow restoration, and pollinator habitat creation. The organization's mission centers on making nature accessible to all while fostering meaningful connections to the natural world. As both a working garden and learning center, Distant Hill demonstrates practical applications of ecological landscaping principles, arborcare, and fine gardening techniques that inspire visitors to cultivate their own native plant landscapes.
