Master Gardener Program

About

The Mississippi State University Extension Master Gardener Program trains and certifies volunteers in consumer horticulture and related gardening practices. Through a structured volunteer program requiring 40 hours of initial training followed by 40 hours of community service, Master Gardeners extend the educational reach of university research and horticultural expertise to local communities throughout Mississippi. Participants gain access to university-backed horticultural information, connect with experienced gardeners, and contribute to county Extension projects that benefit their neighborhoods. The program supports long-term engagement through continuing education requirements and has cultivated a respected network of volunteers who typically serve five to seven years. By combining educational training with meaningful volunteer service, the Master Gardener Program strengthens county Extension offices' ability to serve the public while developing informed, community-focused gardening advocates.
