Master Gardener Program

About

The University of DC Master Gardener Program trains volunteers in sustainable urban gardening practices through a comprehensive certification program rooted in District of Columbia's sustainability goals. As part of UDC's College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, the program equips residents with knowledge in sustainable horticulture, landscape problem-solving, and vegetable and ornamental growing tailored to urban settings. Master Gardener volunteers become certified representatives of UDC who work throughout all 8 wards to build a healthier city by supporting community garden projects, urban farms, school gardens, and public spaces. The program emphasizes accessibility, equity, and practical hands-on experience, enabling participants to solve gardening problems and educate their neighbors on sustainable practices. Beyond formal training, the program offers an online Q&A service providing expert gardening guidance to DC residents within 48 hours, making horticultural expertise available to the entire community.
