About
The University of Georgia Extension Master Gardener Program is a statewide volunteer initiative that connects plant enthusiasts with UGA Extension to build healthier communities across Georgia. Through trained Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs), the program delivers science-based consumer horticulture education focused on plant selection, care, and sustainable gardening practices for ornamental landscapes and home food production. Master Gardeners share their expertise with community members on using plants to improve environmental quality, personal health, and quality of life. With a 45-year history of growing communities and fostering environmental stewardship, the program emphasizes native plants, soil health, erosion control, and landscape resilience while addressing topics from basic gardening fundamentals to advanced horticultural techniques.
The program offers multiple pathways for community engagement, including the comprehensive Master Gardener volunteer training program with continuing education requirements, shorter non-volunteer courses like Master Your Garden, workshops covering native plants and gardening techniques, and educational webinars on topics such as erosion management and native plant landscaping. Participants gain access to gardening resources, plant identification guides, and hands-on training in sustainable practices. The Georgia Master Gardener Program serves as a vital link between university research and local county Extension offices, ensuring that Georgians receive reliable, research-based information to transform their outdoor spaces into thriving, environmentally responsible gardens.
