Master Gardener Program

About

The West Virginia University Extension Master Gardener Program empowers residents to become knowledgeable horticulture advocates through comprehensive training and community engagement. Operating through local WVU Extension offices across the state, the program offers both Basic/Level 1 and Advanced/Level 2 training that covers 54 hours of instruction in diverse horticultural topics including botany, plant propagation, soil science, West Virginia native plants, and sustainable gardening practices. Master Gardeners contribute to their communities through beautification projects, school gardening programs, and demonstration gardens while gaining personal development and improved quality of life. The program combines rigorous education with meaningful volunteer work, requiring participants to complete 40 initial volunteer hours and maintain 20 annual volunteer hours alongside continuing education to sustain their certification and expertise.
